Wilson Independent Releases Video With Rare Footage of TN Coal Disaster

NASHVILLE, TN/USA (December 31, 2008) - A video containing rare footage of the recent Tennessee coal spill, including interviews with local residents and close up footage of the contamination, has been released online by Wilson Independent. The spill occurred on Monday Dec. 15, 2008, in Roane County, TN., and is regarded as one of the worst environmental disasters in US history.

Coal and ash slurry, the normal byproduct of coal-fired electricity generation, is usually stored in retention ponds near coal plants. Early Monday morning, the catastrophic failure of a retention pond near the small towns of Harriman and Kingston, TN, released over a half billion gallons of potentially toxic sludge into the area, damaging 15 homes and injuring one resident as it knocked his home off its foundation. The flood of sludge also entered tributaries to the Tennessee River causing a 20-foot river swell. The contaminated rivers put the water supply at risk for major cities like Chattanooga, and for millions of other people in Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky. Altogether the spill left over 400 acres of land covered by several feet of coal ash, mud, and contaminated water. 2.6 million cubic yards of slurry was released, over 40 times the amount of contaminated sludge released in the Exxon Valdez disaster of 1989.

Following the spill, access to the contaminated sites was highly restricted. Aerial shots of the affected area were aired by local television news, and amateur photographers captured images of large numbers of dead fish washed up on the riverbanks, as well as still shots of the area covered in mud and ash, but interview footage and close up video of the actual damage was nonexistent. On Dec. 24, 2008, Jeff Wilson of Wilson Independent, a Nashville based film and video production company, along with fashion model and environmental activist Summer Rayne Oakes, who has been a television correspondent for CNN, Fox News, MTV, and The Discovery Channel, traveled to the site of the catastrophe to conduct interviews and document the event. The resulting video, Swan Pond Road: The Kingston Coal Disaster, shot and edited by Wilson and hosted by Oakes, was released online and was immediately posted by several prominent environmental sites including treehugger.com, watthead.com, cleantechcollective.com and itsgettinghotinhere.org.
